P2 and P1 in Road America Doubleheader

June 26, 2017

Patrick Long had cause to celebrate after he and the Wright Motorsports team put together a strong weekend, consolidating championship points by taking P2 in Saturday’s Pirelli World Challenge sprint round 5, then following it up with a race win in Sunday’s round 6.

Long started Saturday’s race from the second row, and benefitted from Johnny O’Connell’s opening lap spin after contact with polesitter Adderly Fong’s Bentley. Patrick tucked up behind Fong’s car and moved into P2, a position he’d not relinquish for the remainder of the race.

In Sunday’s race, Patrick started on the outside of row one and left no doubt as he out-dragged Fong’s Bentley into turn one, then pulled a gap in the opening few laps. The race was red-flagged due to collision debris on track, then quickly went back to yellow flags after a brief period of racing. Through it all, Long was able to maintain his lead in the race, sweeping home at the end to take his second Sprint race win of the season. Next on the PWC schedule is another doubleheader at Mid-Ohio, July 28-30.
